I wonder what James Bond's carbon footprint is, and whether he ever offsets his emissions. I'd be prepared to hazard a guess that he doesn't. I admit I haven't taken the time to tot up the tonnes of carbon he produces in the forthcoming Casino Royale, but it must be pretty significant. Let's look at the locations:
A lot of the movie has been filmed in Prague. After a stint there, the production moved to the Bahamas. Several locations around New Providence were used for filming, including Paradise Island and the southern Coral Harbour area.
The crew then returned to the Czech Republic, filming in Prague, Plana and Loket, before completing in the town of Karlovy Vary (a disused spa, formerly known as the Kaiserbad, in Karlovy Vary was used as the exterior of the Casino Royale).
The majority of the film's ending will be set in Venice. Other scenes in the latter half of the film were filmed at the Villa del Balbianello on the shores of Lake Como. Further shooting for the movie took place at properties such as the Villa la Gaeta, near the lakeside town of Menaggio.
I guess it's unrealistic to expect Bond to hoof it around the world on trains and on public transport - after all, the bad guys surely don't care about the environment, so wouldn't think twice about hopping on a plane. Just make sure you catch them, James.
Casino Royale will premiere at Odeon Leicester Square in London on 14th November 2006.
