Our deepest sympathies go out to the family of the two children who died of carbon monoxide poisoning last week in Corfu.
The Greek Tourism Organisation's chief has flown to the island to extend his condolences, and to head up the inquiry into the Corcyra Beach Hotel, which he says must be as transparent as possible.
It is surprising that the hotel was not immediately closed down as a safety precaution - apparently a significant number of guests remain there. The hotel owner, manager and two maintenance staff face up to five years in jail if convicted of manslaughter.
But the investigations should not end there. As well as the hotel itself, similar vigilance should be extended to the regulatory system that passed the hotel as safe. This system was just as at fault as the hotel's water boiler. If confidence in Corfu's tourism industry is to be restored, all hotels bound by this regulatory system should be re-checked.
