Milan's famed La Scala opera house has opened its new season with a production which many are hoping will re-establish Italy's supremacy in the art of opera. Franco Zeffirelli, returning to La Scala after 14 years, directed the production of Verdi's Aida, which he says is the best ever seen at La Scala.
The story focuses on Aida, an Ethiopian princess, who is captured and brought into slavery in Egypt. A military commander, Radames, struggles to choose between his love for her and his loyalty to the Pharaoh. To complicate the story further, Radames is loved by the Pharaoh's daughter Amneris, although he does not return the feeling.
"We want to make La Scala the world capital for opera," Zeffirelli said. Added to the relatively recently reopened La Fenice in Venice, Italy is certainly incredibly strong on opera houses.
